The Library of Congressional Law has been collecting official foreign journals since the mid-nineteenth century and maintains one of the largest collections of these sources in the world. Official gazettes are primary sources of law published by national governments to disseminate new laws, regulations and decisions of government agencies. These publications may also contain other information, including the text of international agreements, court decisions, official announcements and government notices. For countries with civil law systems, the Official Gazette often serves as the single source for relevant legislation until updated codes are published. In most countries, a law enters into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette. The Foreign Official Gazette (FOG) database contains records for about 650 Official Gazette titles from countries other than the United States. This is a “union list” of holdings from major collections in North America, encompassing both CRL holdings and the holdings of five other major libraries. For more information, see the FAQ. Research database An official journal is the legal journal of a country or an administrative part of a country that publishes the text of new laws, regulations, ordinances, treaties, legal notices and court decisions.
Laws published in the Official Gazette are of primary law in the official source; Publication in the Official Journal in many cases justifies the case-law. The published text is the authoritative version and usually the only published version. The “Notices” section of the Official Journal contains important information and changes to the rules on patents and trademarks. You can view these notes below. They are also available in the electronic version of the OG for patents. The Law Library Gazette collection includes current, historical and subnational jurisdictions. The two dashboards (Desktop External and Mobile External) represent an interactive geographic index of the Law Library of Congress` Gazette collection. Users can explore the collection through an interactive map or use the drop-down menus to search and filter the results. Each row represents a different record in the catalog, and users can view specific inventory information by clicking the Library Catalog link for that record. The collection presented in the dashboard is content from the Law Library of Congress, which means that the “digital” filter in the search only provides content digitized by the library, not gazettes in commercial databases or free online collections.
In the Law Library`s Online Law Guide, you will find official journals that are available free of charge online. Dashboards are updated regularly to change records and add additional jurisdictions. In 2014, CRL received a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to preserve and make available on the open Internet threatened government records from ten African states and the Persian Gulf where the integrity of public records is threatened (see original announcement). CRL has worked with partners such as LLMC, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, the LA Law Library, the New York Public Library, and Princeton University to find content to digitize. There is a separate gazette for patents and an official journal for trademarks, and the last 52 issues of each issue are available online. The consolidated list is a compilation of the main notices and amendments to the regulations published in the Official Journal from 1 July 1964 to 31 December 1998.
