When is this internship?: We have four internship periods, approximately January to April, May to July, July to September and October to December. Law students who have completed at least one full semester of law school by the application deadline are eligible. The most successful candidates complete a summer articling period between the second and third years of law school; However, law students who begin a full-time articling or graduate law program may complete an articling after graduation.

Students have the opportunity to conduct legal research, write legal briefs, participate in policy discussions, and assist in drafting applications, requests for investigations, briefs, and regulatory guidance. OGIS provides mediation services to resolve FOIA disputes, verifies regulatory compliance with FOIA, and identifies policies and procedures to improve FOIA compliance. In addition to his dispute resolution and compliance functions, the Director of OGIS chairs the FOIA Federal Advisory Committee and co-chairs the FOIA Leadership Council. OGIS provides dispute resolution training to federal FOIA professionals and key FOIA stakeholders, including the applicant community, civil society groups, and open government advocates. The articling student assists the Office of the Legal Counsel in providing the legal services listed above. Duties may include reviewing witness statements and draft legislation, preparing legal opinions on ethical issues, researching administrative matters and, where appropriate, drafting memoranda.
The intern will also participate in SOL`s summer internship program, which includes weekly meetings with guest speakers. The intern may also attend meetings with the SOL Front Office and other SOL departments, as appropriate. OLC also hosts the SOL Honors Attorney program for junior lawyers, giving the articling student the opportunity to meet and interact with law school graduates. We expect this internship to be entirely virtual. Candidates must demonstrate high academic achievement and an interest in the public service.
