Articling students working in the substantive activities of legal aid assist lawyers in representing clients in proceedings before the DC Superior Court and public authorities. Interns have the opportunity to interact with clients and can attend client meetings, hearings, hearings and administrative proceedings. They can also help staff our housing, consumer and family law projects. Tasks include legal research, preparation of legal documents and memoranda, and fact-finding. The Consumer Practice Group is advocating in state and federal courts to protect our clients` most valuable financial assets, including their homes, cars, savings, income, and utilities. Our work includes defending against mortgage foreclosures and other types of debt collection cases, fighting consumer fraud, and filing for bankruptcy to eliminate debt and protect critical assets. In the winter of 2018, the Legal Aid Society partnered with Harvard University to offer “winter ships” to Harvard students. The Winternship allowed students to accompany staff for 1-3 days during their winter vacation in January, giving them the opportunity to watch court cases and ask questions. It provides participants with hands-on experience and educates students about the work the Legal Aid Society does in the service of New Yorkers. The application deadline for internships for summer 2023 ends on December 16, 2022.Our 2022 summer internship program runs from May 23 to July 29. These internships provide an opportunity to enhance research and writing skills, observe legal practice in a large federal agency, and become familiar with key areas of law by addressing the issues faced by Treasury Department attorneys and their clients. We expect a 10-week commitment from our summer interns. Undergraduate interns assist legal aid staff in representing individuals and families in adversarial proceedings before the Superior Court of D.C. and various public bodies. Undergraduate trainees are not assigned to a substantive unit/area of practice. The duties of the undergraduate articling student include responding to telephone inquiries from individuals seeking legal counsel; Filing and retrieval of court documents; Welcome potential clients who turn to legal aid for help; service of subpoenas; the revision and organisation of legal acts; correspondence writing; and summary of admission interviews. Interns attend internal meetings and are responsible for certain administrative tasks. Interns may also have the opportunity to conduct research and factual investigations, participate in meetings with clients, and observe court hearings and proceedings. LSC student interns are supervised and supervised by experienced clinical instructors.
Articling students conduct interviews with potential clients seeking advice or support. The Practice Group on Immigrants and Labour Rights is a multidisciplinary team focused on employment, immigration, agricultural workers` rights and human trafficking. The team serves migrant and agricultural workers by addressing housing, health and safety rights, immigration and human trafficking claims, wage theft and other illegal acts related to their work. The Trafficking Survivors Assistance Program (PTST) provides comprehensive services to survivors of human trafficking, including immigration, victim advocacy with law enforcement agencies, and civil claims for damages for survivors.
